China urges Russia to protect Chinese businessmen's interests in Russia(07/09/09)

China urges int'l community for united stance on terrorism

BEIJING, July 9(Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang Thursday urged the international community to abide by a single standard in dealing with terrorism.

Qin was speaking at a ministry press conference about the deadly riot in Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, on Sunday, which left at least 156 people dead and more than 1,000 injured. He said terrorism was a public enemy of the international community.

For China and neighboring counties, the three forces of "terrorism, separatism and extremism" were regional public enemies, which the international community should unite to combat, take the same actions and improve cooperation, he said.

It should not take two different standards, he said.

In both the United Nations and with its regional neighbors, China had always supported and cooperated in international actions against terrorism, he said.

Qin said the Chinese government had evidence that the people suspected of inciting the riot had received training from terrorist organizations abroad.

"They have countless ties with the three forces abroad, so we urge that all countries in this region to enhance cooperation to secure stability and peace in our region," he said.

The government said it has evidence to prove that the separatist World Uyghur Congress led by Rebiya Kadeer had incited and organized the riot.

China opposes Turkey's call for UN talks on Xinjiang

BEIJING, July 9 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday dismissed Turkey's proposal of discussing Xinjiang's riots in the United Nations Security Council, saying the incident was a domestic issue.

"The Chinese government has taken decisive measures according to the law. This is purely China's internal affair and doesn't demand a UN Security Council discussion," Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang told the regular briefing.

Qin's comments came after Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday said Turkey would ask the UN body to discuss ways of ending the violence in northwest China's Xinjiang region.

Sunday's riots in Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, left at least 156 people dead and more than 1,000 injured.

Four employees of the Anglo-Australian miner Rio Tinto Ltd. have been arrested over alleged stealing of China's state secrets, including Stern Hu, general manager of the company's Shanghai office.

"Hu is suspected of stealing China's state secret. The four people including Hu had been detained by China's security authorities Sunday evening," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang at a press conference Thursday.

China urges Russia to protect Chinese businessmen's interests in Russia

BEIJING, July 9 (Xinhua) -- China urged Russia here Thursday to protect its businessmen's interests in Russia.

"We have urged the Russians to protect Chinese businessmen's interests in Russia and we also reminded all the Chinese entrepreneurs there to abide by the local laws and regulations," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang told a routine press conference.

Qin's remarks came following a reporter's question about the recent raid at the Cherkizovsky Market, in the east of Moscow, the Russian capital.

During the operation, according to a report from local media, Russia's Federal Migration Service picked up 150 Chinese.

Qin said China had not received any official notification about the operation, and Chinese embassy in Russia was instructed to investigate.
